Intelligent rolling mill control systems are rapidly gaining popularity in the steel industry and are becoming a key driving force for enhancing production efficiency and product quality.
Intelligent rolling mill control systems are rapidly gaining traction in the steel industry and are becoming a key driver for enhancing both production efficiency and product quality. This system integrates automation control, sensor networks, data analytics, and artificial intelligence technologies. By continuously monitoring critical parameters such as temperature, pressure, and displacement during the rolling process, it enables precise control of the manufacturing process. For example, the non-steady-state thickness adaptive control technology developed by Northeastern University leverages big data analytics to analyze fluctuations in rolling force and combines this with feedforward control algorithms, significantly improving the precision of plate thickness across the same batch. This approach effectively addresses the thickness deviations caused by response lags inherent in traditional control methods.
The deep application of big data technology is the core advantage of intelligent rolling mills. By building a distributed data acquisition system that collects mill operating data at high frequency, and combining this with machine learning algorithms to uncover the correlations between process parameters and product quality, we can develop dynamic optimization models. For example, in the intelligent control technology for head bending in medium- and thick-plate rolling, a fuzzy neural network is trained to model the relationship between rolling process parameters and the shape of head warping. Coupled with real-time image recognition feedback, this approach enables adaptive correction of warping, significantly improving the rectangularity of the final product.
Currently, the intelligent rolling mill control system has been widely adopted and deployed on more than 30 production lines at companies including Shougang and Baosteel, covering mainstream products such as medium- and thick-sized plates and hot-rolled strip steel. Its value is not only reflected in improved product quality but also in reduced overall costs through features like predictive maintenance and energy optimization, thereby driving the steel industry toward a green and low-carbon transformation. With the integration of technologies such as 5G and digital twins, rolling precision and production flexibility are poised for a new round of breakthroughs.
